Ben Spencer, is an Associate Professor in the University of Washington Department of Landscape Architecture, an Adjunct Associate Professor in the University of Washington Department of Global Health, the co-founder of the Informal Urban Communities Initiative, and a director at Architects w/o Borders-Seattle, Architects Designers and Planners for Social Responsibility-USA and ARC-Peace International. Ben’s work is collaborative and interdisciplinary. It integrates research, practice, service and teaching, explores the relationship between the built environment, ecology and human wellbeing in developing urban communities and champions design and technology as a vehicles for environmental regeneration and social justice. His current projects are based in Lomas de Zapallal, a slum community in northern Lima, Peru. Ben’s work has been recognized published internationally. Most recently, he won the 2014 CELA Award for Excellence in Service Learning, the 2014 Public Interest Global Award and the 2014 SEED Award. He is co-editor of the book, NOW Urbanism, The Future City is Here.
