The Bachelor of Landscape Architecture program
admits students after the second year of their college careers.
Acceptance as a major occurs in the Spring Quarter of the second
year, and students begin the program in the following Autumn Quarter.
Admission to the BLA program is competitive. Applications are evaluated
by the BLA Admissions Committee using the following criteria:
- Academic record
- Evidence of creative potential
- Graphic and verbal fluency
All applicants to the program, including transfer applicants, postbaccalaureate applicants, and students currently enrolled at the University of Washington, must submit their application for admission to the Department by February 15. Applicants will be notified of the Admission's Committee's decision by April 15.
In addition, transfer and postbaccalaureate applicants must apply to the University Office of Undergraduate Admissions by January 15.
Applications to the Department must include:
- One copy of the Application for Admission to the Bachelor of Landscape Architecture Program
- One Official Transcript from each junior college, college or university attended
- A Brief Statement of Objectives.: Include educational experiences, community service, and business situations which may have helped you decide to become a landscape architect
- Three Letters of Recommendation
- Portfolio of work in visual and/or design, or other creative endeavors
Portfolio:
This should include examples of work demonstrating your creative capabilities, graphic proficiency, and aesthetic and environmental sensitivity. Work should be submitted as photographs, prints, photostats or reproductions. No original documents should be submitted: the Department will not be responsible for portfolio materials
Exhibits may include products from crafts, artwork, photography, design studios, creative writing, musical compositions, or other pieces of work which demonstrate your abilities. Briefly explain each exhibit adding a clear indication of your contribution when the exhibit is the work of a team. The portfolio must be no larger than 8 1/2" x 11". Do not submit slides or video tapes.
Portfolios with return postage or stamped envelopes will be returned four weeks from notification of accept/deny unless specifically requested by the applicant. All unclaimed portfolios will be retained for one calendar year.

For Transfer and Postbaccalaureate Applicants
In addition to the Department application, Transfer and Postbaccalaureate Applicants must send the following to the University Undergraduate Admissions Office:
- UW Application for Admission: Submit with $38 fee together with online or downloaded application by January 15th (suggested) but not later than February 15th.
- Official high school transcript (Transfer only)
- Two official transcripts from each college or university attended
- Transfer applicants from non-English-speaking countries who are not U.S. citizens must submit scores from the TOEFL or the Michigan Language Test
