As a licensed landscape architect and a long-term lecturer, Luanne brings to the professional practice degree programs a level of expertise and experience that is both desirable and critical. Her professional work has a broad scope from large-scale facilities (such as the WestPoint Secondary Sewage Treatment Facility) to small private oasis gardens.  Some key projects of interest deal with ecological planting design, water catchment systems, universal access, affordable housing, and restorative garden spaces. As the Department participates in more collaborative studios, with ‘real’ sites, her professional managements skills combined with years of instruction provide a seamless melding for both the students and the ‘client’.

design studio instruction - With over 10 cumulative years of studio instruction, this is where her passion and effectiveness comes alive. Luanne has successfully integrated the principles of sustainable design into her studios.  Recently, her class assisted the City of Shoreline in developing ‘Guidelines for Sustainable Neighborhood Development’. Students gained knowledge of the importance of applying sustainable landscape principles to the conceptual phase of their designs. Reviews have consistently been positive and appreciative of her teaching style.

collaboration - Having positive working relationships with instructors, students and organizations is a strength that Luanne genuinely values and has diligently cultivated and refined. A sampling of agencies that she has worked with include: the National Parks Service, the Cascade Neighborhood of Seattle, the Seattle Art Museum, AIDS Housing of Washington, and the Swedish Medical Center Foundation.

sustainable landscape construction - Recently, in the Materials and Methods in Landscape Construction (Larch 332) class, Luanne continued the tradition of infusing the class with sustainable construction practices. Some of the technical areas we focused on were: green walls, permeable paving, water retention and cleansing, efficient landscape lighting, noise pollution, life-cycle costing, and the art and skill of construction detail drawing.

education - Luanne received her Master's in Landscape Architecture and Bachelor's in Landscape Architecture from the University of Oregon. She holds a BS in Art Education from the University of Edinboro, Pennsylvania. Prior to joining the faculty at the University of Washington, Luanne was in professional practice with Swift & Company Landscape Architects and the Portico Group, both in Seattle. Luanne is a registered landscape architect and currently a partner in Graysmith Landscape Architects.
