Associate Professor Daniel Winterbottom's interests focus
on urban and community landscape design, vernacular landscapes, therapeutic
gardens, sustainable design and the craft and detailing of built forms.
Through his design teaching and practice Daniel explores the social,
ecological and psychological implications of open space design and how
environments can support those dealing with health related stresses.
In addition, he is interested in how landscapes become or are used as
places of cultural expression, how they offer opportunities to enrich
ecological awareness and provide a framework in which social engagement
can take place. Daniel teaches both undergraduate and graduate studios
with an emphasis on community design and cultural identification. He
serves as an adviser on both architecture and landscape architecture
theses and has developed a nationally recognized design/build program
in the department. His research focuses on the cultural influences inherent
in landscape design, innovations in landscape technologies and in design
critique.
Daniel received his Master's in Landscape Architecture from Harvard University.
He holds a BFA from Tuft's University and a Diploma of Fine Art from the
School of the Fine Arts, Boston. Previous to joining the faculty at the
University of Washington, Daniel was in professional practice for eight
years with SVR Design Company and the Portico Group, both in Seattle. Daniel
is a registered landscape architect and currently the principle of Winterbottom
Design, a Seattle based Landscape Architecture and Site Planning firm.
